Calne & District Skittles League

Congratulations to Syms SC and to Woodlands for winning the Division One and Division Two titles respectively

History & General Information

The Calne & District Skittles League was founded in 1936, and apart from a break during World War Two has been contested ever since. In that time it has grown so that now there are 30 teams. For a brief history of the game of skittles click here

The League is contested by teams representing public houses and clubs within a 12 mile radius of Calne in the county of Wiltshire in England; this area covers not only Calne, but also the nearby towns and villages of Chippenham, Devizes, Corsham, Melksham, Wootton Bassett, Tytherton, Kington St. Michael, Compton Bassett, Avebury, Bromham, Sutton Benger, Bushton, Coate and Goatacre.

Teams consist of 12 players. League matches consist of 4 legs, the winners of each leg gaining 2 points. The team that scores the most pins overall is also awarded 2 points, so that 10 points are available altogether for each match. Matches in Division 1 are played to "Front Pin" rules, i.e. players must hit the front pin first to score. Division 2 play ordinary, sometimes known as "rough" skittles, i.e. all pins knocked down count. League matches are normally played on Friday evenings, some Cup matches are played on Tuesday evenings.
